Betty White = One of a Kind

Betty White is currently 89 years old and is still working in television shows and movies.  Now how cool is that because how many 89 year olds are working today?  I would guess almost none.  On May 5, 2011 is the day that Betty White came to the Smith Haven Mall to do her book signing.  If you don't know already Betty White published another book titled If You Ask Me and of Course You Won't. When I found out about this book signing I think I was dancing while reading this because I was excited.  I knew that I had to go to this book signing.

The night before the book signing I don't think I even slept.  I couldn't stop thinking about meeting Betty White. A few weeks before when I found out that Betty White was coming I decided that I would crochet her a blanket.  While crocheting I guess I made a few mistakes because the blanket looked like a front of a dress.  Still I thought it looked unique and decided to give it to her no matter what.  I also planned ahead for what I would wear.  I had a FREE ELKA shirt from Hot in Cleveland and two Betty White hoodie buddies.  If you don't know what a hoodie buddie is this is a sweater with ear phones attached and you can plug your ipod into it.  I decided to wear my hoodie buddie that said "Betty White Long Live the Queen".  It also had a picture of Betty White in the middle of it.  Everything seemed perfect.

The morning of the book signing I planned on heading to Smith Haven Mall around 9am.  I live about an hour and a half from the mall so I took the train in.  I arrived at the mall at 10:30am.  I walked into the Barnes and Nobles confident that I would I be able to get on line.  When I went to the customer service desk I asked them where to line up for the signing?  Then they told me something I wish to never have heard.  They said "Sorry but we can't take any more people, we filled up to the maximum number".  When the lady said this my happiness dropped.  I felt like I had a large rock dropped on me.  I was just crushed.  I remember walking outside in front of the store and sitting on a bench.  I then started to cry.  I was just devastated because I had planned on going for weeks.  I even wrote a letter and crocheted a blanket.  Even my sister wrote her a letter.  I also felt like I was letting my sister down because I wouldn't be able to deliver that letter to Betty White.  I then made a few calls to my parents telling them what had happened.  At this point I had just given up.  I just wanted to lay on the bench and take a nap because I was too sad.  But things changed.  I thought to myself that I could go to her book signing tomorrow in the city.  Originally I was going to the book signing in the city but chose not to because I was going with my dad late thursday night to pick up my sister from college.  But I was set on meeting Betty White because I just wanted to tell her how amazing she is, and I wanted to give her the blanket I made her.  So  when I made the decision to go the next day everything changed.

I got up from the bench and decided I might as well do some pity shopping.  And that's exactly what I did.  It was around 12pm, so I went into The Cheesecake Factory and got myself a piece of cheesecake.  I then walked into the mall and headed toward the food court to eat my cake.  Sadly the cake was ice cold and it was hard to eat.  Still that didn't stop me from going shopping.  I bought some shirts for my mom for Mother's Day, got a few belts and even bought my parents an anniversary present.  I even sat in one of the chairs where you put money into and it gives you a back massage.  I was starting to feel a bit better about this day.  So I decided to go back to Barnes and Nobles and get Betty White's book.  I also asked again to see if anything had change and they had room.  The answer was no.  So I went back into the mall and found a comfy seat and started to read her book.  I finished it within an hour and a half.  I really enjoyed it.  Since I still had some time to spare before my mom picked me up I started to watch The Mary Tyler Moore Show I received from netflix.  I watched a few episodes until my computer battery was almost completely dead.  By that time it was about the time my mom was coming to pick me up.  I went outside and sat in front of the Barnes and Nobles.  By this time people had already been lining up with their tickets to go see Betty White.  This made me depressed by watching this because I had wanted to be one of those people in line.  I sat with my hood over my head looking miserable.  About 10 minutes later my mom pulled up in her car and said to ask someone on line if they could give my present to Betty White for me.  Those words hurt so bad because I had been wanting to give them to Betty White myself.  A minute later I gave in and figured it would better to get someone else to give it to her even if I couldn't.  So I got up and walked over to the front of the line.  I saw this older looking woman and I thought maybe she would be kind enough to do this one favor for me.  So I asked "Hi.  I didn't get a ticket to see Betty White today and I was just wondering if you could give this to her for me"?  The lady seemed speechless and then this one guy said "Why not just it give it to someone who works here.  They probably will give it to her for you".  I said okay and I was walking toward one of the workers until something amazing happened.

As I was walking I heard someone yell "Do you need a ticket?  I have an extra one".  I saw this young lady waving her hand wearing a Navy uniform.  At this point I was looking at her in shock.  I couldn't believe what was happening.  She then held out the extra ticket and I just stared at it.  At this point my mom had parked her car and walked up behind me.  I was too shocked to even notice until she asked me what's going on.  I'm not sure who told her what was happening because all I can remember is being speechless.  It all felt like a dream.  I took the ticket and went under the ropes into the line.  Then someone one else yelled out in the line "is that your mom I have an extra ticket for her".  I was like this has got to be a joke.  I must be dreaming and I'm going to wake up soon.  The man came up to the ropes and handed her the ticket.  My mom then came under the ropes too and joined the line.  Then the people were telling us we need to get a sticker on our books and also my mom had to buy the book.  My mom and I ran into the store.  We both got on line and from the looks of the line it looked like it would be forever.  I felt like I was on adrenaline rush.  None of it seemed real.  I was talking to my mom on line and telling her I don't know what happened.  I can't believe this is happening. Finally we got to the front of the line.  I got the sticker on my book and my mom was buying hers. She then asked the person how many books can we get signed and she said 2.  My mom then decided to get a 2nd book signed for my sister.  I was thinking just buy the books and lets get back on line.

The picture for the article
We finally arrived back on the line.  The tickets that we got were in order by numbers.  My number was 14 and my mom was number 20.  I remember getting back in the line and in shock still.  I finally introduced myself to the person who made my dreams come true.  She told me her name was Fran O'brien.  I couldn't stop thanking her for what she had done.  This meant everything to me.  I started off with a lousy day and then it became amazing.  She then introduced me to her aunt and her mom.  I then started to tell them how thankful I was for this.  I really wanted to repay them back. This literally was a dream come true.  At this time it was about 6:30pm and there was a reporter and she had seen Fran and wanted to get an interview from her because she was in the Navy.  I thought that was pretty cool and then the reporter wanted to get a picture with everyone she came with.  Fran then told me to join them and I was like what.  I thought it was just a joke so I stood still in the line.  But then my mom said go and so did everyone else so I went.  They told the reporter that I was a friend and I traveled from Florida with them.  Honestly I found that hilarious.  I got to pretend I was from Florida and I got to be in a picture for an article.  Now that was cool.  About 20 minutes later the line started to move.  We were brought in the store and had to go up to the second floor.

I remember when we got to the second floor and into the spot we had to be in I made sure I took all of the stuff I bought that day and took it out of the bag I was giving to Betty White.  I called my sister and told her I got on line.  I told her the story and then I got to tell her that I was coming to pick her up at college.  I was so excited and then I hung up the phone abruptly because I wanted to save the battery.  I remember just sitting on the floor thinking OMG what is going on. Very soon I will be meeting a LEGEND.  If you ever want to know how to prepare to meet a legend let me tell you  a few things.  First make sure to go to the bathroom because you don't want to get so excited and then pee your pants.
Me and Fran O'Brien
Also make sure you bring a lot of water with you so you don't pass out in front of the Legendary person you are about to meet.  If you haven't guessed it already I'm trying to make a joke.  Yes it is probably a bad joke but who cares this is all about meeting the coolest person in the world BETTY WHITE.  After being quiet I started talking to other people in line.  I occasionally went back to Fran to tell her she was the greatest and I don't know how to repay her. My mom wanted to remember this moment so she asked Fran if I could take a picture with her and she said of course.  Fran was really cool and nice about giving me the ticket.  I honestly don't think I would have met anyone else who would of actually given me a ticket for the signing.  What was even more amazing is how close we were to the front.

Finally it was just minutes before Betty White came to the 2nd floor to start the book signing.  Since she would be taking an elevator, luckily enough we were close to the elevator.  Even though some people were closer I actually got on the floor and crawled right to where the rope was.  I was basically looking through people's legs to get a first look at Betty White.  I even told Fran I would take pictures for her.  Sadly enough that day I sucked at taking pictures and didn't get any decent ones.  After seeing the elevator go up and down several times and no Betty White, luck finally changed.  Betty White came out of the elevator and quickly went into a room right next to the elevator.  I was like AAAAAAH THAT'S BETTY WHITE OMG!!!!!!!  I did not yell that out thankfully.  But then a minute or two later she came out and then I started saying "Betty White you rock".  She actually turned around and said thank you.  What's funny is that I was on my knees and hands when I said that.  A few minutes later the line started to move and the book signing began.

Me Fran O'Brien and Betty White
Betty White
Right before it was my turn, Fran was in front of me.  She was lucky enough to get a picture with Betty White.  I thought that was amazing, and when she posted the picture online I was like OMG.  At the edge of the picture you can see me standing there.  Even though I'm not next to Betty White I still say I got in a picture with Betty White in it.  Now it was my turn to go up.  In the line my mom had written out a check to Betty White's Animal foundation called the Morrison Animal Foundation.  I was so nervous and excited that I just handed her the check with out telling her what it was.  Then I said " Is it okay if I give this to you?  I crocheted this blanket but I just want to warn you it doesn't look like a blanket it.  It looks like a dress you could probably wear to the red carpet".  I was trying to make a joke but it failed horribly.  She said Thank you so much, and then I said " Do you recognize this"? I point to my hoodie buddie and she looked at me confused so I zipped it up and she laughed saying that was cute and then I said wait and I unzipped my hoodie buddie half way and then flung it open and showed her the FREE ELKA shirt.  She thought it was so cute and started to laugh.  I was like omg this is so cool.  And then I as started to walk away, and luckily I got to say this "I just wanted to say that you inspired me to want to bring back the old classic shows, silent movies, and slapstick comedies".  She kept saying thank you and was I was just in awe of what had just happened.  But the workers at Barnes and Nobles kept making sure everything moved fast so I had to get out as soon as possible behind the ropes.  Behind these ropes we were allowed to take pictures of Betty White.  Sadly my phone decided that it didn't want to work so I didn't get any.  I was shaking from just the experience of meeting Betty White.  I noticed that everyone who walked out from meeting Betty White were also shaking.  It was just an amazing experience.  I then had to wait for my mom. I got to see her meet Betty White.  I was wondering what she was saying to her.  So as soon as she was done she came over to me and I asked what did you tell her.  My mom said "I told her that she looked beautiful and that you once told me that you wished Betty White would adopt you so she could be your mother".  I was looking at her like what did you just say.  My told me I said that once and I have no memory of that, but thinking back on it I probably did say something like that but not meaning it literally.  My mom said that "Betty White thought it was funny and she laughed and she even touched my hand".  I was like wow Betty White actually touched your hand that is so cool.  Even my mom couldn't stop smiling and she also couldn't stop talking about how beautiful she was, and how she looked the same as she looked on television. It was a once in life time opportunity we got and we are both so happy about it.  I don't think I have ever seen my mom so happy before in my life.

Betty White
As we started to leave the Barnes and Nobles I noticed how long the line was.  This line was extremely long, and it was like a maze of people weaving in and out of bookshelves.  The line was extraordinary to look at while leaving.  Before we left I thanked Fran and her family again.  As I walked to the car with my mom I started calling the rest of my family to tell them what had happened.  It wasn't until a few minutes in the car when I realized. I JUST FLASHED BETTY WHITE.

Even realizing I had flashed Betty White it didn't matter.  I still couldn't believe that I got to meet her. All of it still felt like a dream.  Even though it was real it was the best dream I ever had.

The Talented Dick Van Dyke

On May 4, 2011, Dick Van Dyke came to Barnes and Nobles in the city to do a book signing for his new book My Lucky Life In and Out of Show Business.  You are probably thinking who is  Dick Van Dyke?  If you are thinking that let me tell you that you have seen him before.  If you remember the movie Mary Poppins he played Bert.  Or how about another classic movie called Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and he played Caractacus Potts.  I bet your all going "Oh now I know who he is".

Just a few months before Dick Van Dyke came to NYC I started watching the show The Dick Van Dyke Show, now that is a classic show.  I loved watching that show because the humor was just amazingly funny.  And the cast were just brilliant in the show.  If you haven't watched the show yet I recommend you do.  So right now go to your netflix and put the show in your que and then come right back to this blog.

Dick Van Dyke
The morning of the book signing I was very excited.  I couldn't wait to meet Dick Van Dyke.  I remember getting to the Barnes and Noble around 11am, and then I just sat in line waiting to be seated.  Even though seating wasn't until 4pm I didn't care I was too excited.  While waiting on line I met some very nice people who were also big fans of Dick Van Dyke.  I think these fans were more dedicated to the book signing because they came from Boston and New Jersey.  Now going to a book signing that is hours away or in a different state I think that shows dedication.  And I'm sitting thinking wow I'm just from NY, it doesn't sound that interesting.  I didn't travel hours away from my home just to come to this book signing, but still it was cool talking to them.  I believe we even made a pact to stick together to make sure we all sat near each other, and everyone saved everyone's spot.  For those who have never been to a book signing I want to tell you that the people in lines are usually nice, and they will have your back if you need to step out of line or need them to save your seat.  We all have the same goal and that is to get our books signed and to meet the author.

At 4pm they let us get to our seats to wait for another 3 hours.  I didn't mind because I was in the front row.  At around 4pm there was a crowd of people starting to form, and by 5pm the first section was already filled.  Then around by 6pm  several more people came.  I was very shocked that the room wasn't pact as my first book signing of Tina Fey's book.  I thought for sure that the floor would have been pact because Dick Van Dyke is a big star.  He's been in films and television shows
for about 50 years.  The movies he's been in have been classics.  At this time the time was moving really slow.  When your excited and time is going as slow as it was its not a lot of fun.  But still I kept watching my phone and checking the time about every minute.  When it was 7pm I knew Dick Van Dyke had arrived by the cheering and clapping.  Everyone was standing up clapping and yelling and just celebrating.

I remember being in the front row and watching him get up on the stage and just becoming star struck.  My mind was racing with a ton of OMG's.  I was just in shock that I was about 2 feet away from him.  When the interview started it was very funny.  Dick Van Dyke knew the perfect time to add a joke.  He even did a few dance moves.  Now I regret not getting that on video.  For those who don't know this Dick Van Dyke is 84 years old. He was very cheerful and always kept smiling.  I kept thinking to myself I have never seen someone smile so much. The way he was acting you would of thought he was in his early 70's.  He has a very upbeat personality.

Dick Van Dyke
Finally the interview had ended and it was time for the book signing.  I was thinking what should I say to him?  I have to say something.  Since I was in the first row in literally 2 minutes I was on line and about to meet him.  So I figured I'll just wing it like I did when I was at the Tina Fey book signing.  So when I got to meet him I was nervous and I said the first words that came out of my mouth.  So I told him "I want to bring back the old classic shows back into this generation of television".  I said it very quietly so I don't think he heard me, but I didn't care.  I was just happy that I got to meet him.

If anyone would like to see some video of his interview here is the link.

GLEE IN NYC

Where my Gleeks at? Alright Gleeks who remembers the week of April 25,2011 to April 29, 2011?  If you don't know the week I'm talking about then let me tell you. It's the week Glee came to NYC to film the finale.

Corey Monteith taking pictures
Day 1: At around 11am I went to go find Glee's filming location.  I found out they were filming by the Fox building and since this was my first time in the city by myself I thought I would never find the building.  But I proved myself wrong because I found the location with in 5 minutes and I was surprised at how many young girls there were.  You would of thought they were in school cause it was a school day, but they had some cool parents who let them skip school that day.  On each side of the building there were about 3 trailers each.  The side that I was on there were cast members in the trailers.  This was the side of the building where I met my friends Gaby and Maria.  We got in a group of 10 girls who were gleeks and we decided to team up to find out where each cast member was.  The first cast member I saw was Corey Monteith.  He got swarmed by 30 girls and I couldn't get a picture with him, but I got a great one of him. He was taking a picture with another girl, and it was the best picture I got of him that day.  I also saw Lea Michele pass by us, and she had a ton of guards walking with her.  Later on in the day after running back and forth from each side of the building to catch a glimpse of a cast member there was some luck.  Because Chris Colfer came out of the make up trailer to go to another trailer, and then Ashley Fink also followed Chris Colfer into his trailer.  By that time a lot of the fans had left and went to the next filming location.  I can tell you this if your going to try and sing a glee song you have to be good at it because if your bad they won't come out.  But if you yell "We Love You Chris".  Now that got Chris Colfer to open his door and say thank you.  A little bit later he and Ashley Fink had to go to their next filming location which was at Gershwin Theatre. Nothing really happened there.  They all went into the theatre and didn't come out to take pictures or autographs.  They did film the scene where Rachel and Kurt sing For Good by Wicked.

Day 2:  Glee filming in Central Park was a great day.  I met Gaby in the city and we took the subway and went to central park.  Let me tell you it's easy to get to central park, but trying to find places in that park is crazy.  At first we had no idea where we were going but after a bit we found the glee casts trailers.  We then headed to where they were filming.  The scene they were filming was Rachel and Finn on the bridge.  After several takes of filming that scene Maria met up with us. We then headed over back to the trailers where Kevin Mchale came out and started to sign autographs.  I was so glad that I got to take a picture with him and get an autograph. He was really a cool guy especially in about 83 degree weather.  A few minutes later we saw some girls come from the other side of the trailers and said they got to meet a few other cast members.  So we all ran for the other side of the trailers.  Now this is where I got to meet a few more cast members.  The first was Diana Agron and she was the sweetest person you could ever meet. She made sure to get everyone an autograph and picture to who ever wanted.  I was glad when I got both.  Then I got to meet Heather Morris.  What's really funny is that I kept calling her Heather Morrison and I didn't realize that I was doing that until Gaby told me.  I could only get an autograph because she had to go.  They all then went on set to film their park scene for the musical number.  I got to say "You rock" to Corey Monteith and he said "No you rock".  I thought that was pretty cool.  After being at Central Park for a few hours the cast headed to their next filming location.  They filmed at Lincoln Center.  If you remember the scene where the cast danced around the fountain, that's the place.  I watched them film several takes before I decided to go to the trailers.  When each cast member was finished filming their scenes they went back to their trailer.  If anyone watches tmz and saw the clip called "Mark Sailing Fleeing" I was in that.  I was the girl with the black backpack and I was holding a notebook and a pen.  I will post the link on the bottom of the blog.  Luckily I got to meet Ashley Fink.  I saw her walking down the street with her body guard and I was telling her how cool she was and she was so kind about it.  I asked for a picture and she said she had to wait until she could sign out.  So I waited outside of her trailer for a few minutes, and next thing I know she came out with out the body guard knowing.  She told him that I had been waiting here for a while and that I wanted a picture.  I was like OMG that is so freaking cool.  As you can see in the picture the body guard is behind us and doesn't look happy.  I didn't know he was there until after but  it looks funny, and I want to say the body guard is a really cool guy.  After the picture she had to go back into the trailer.  Then I went across the street to see if I could get anyone else.  Luckily I got to meet Harry Shum jr.  At the time he was exhausted and I don't blame him.  Having to film all day in 80 degree weather dressed for winter is just insane.  In the picture he looks exhausted and he was still nice enough to let me take one with him.

Me and Matthew Morrison
Day 3: This day was a short day.  They filmed inside of the Intercontinental hotel.  Since the filming took place inside the hotel, none of the cast really came outside.  Mark Sailing and Ashley Fink came outside to give out an item that they made from masking tape and straws while on the set.  One lucky fan got to take it home.  There was word that Matthew Morrison would be the only one coming back to his trailer, I decided to head toward the trailers.  They said he would be back around 9pm and at the time it was around 4pm.  Still I didn't care I wanted to meet him.  So me and 4 other girls stayed by the trailers for a few hours.  Then as luck would have it Matthew Morrison came back to his trailer at 8:30pm.  Then there were a few more fans coming over to the trailers.  Then when he came out to get in his car, he stopped and took pictures with his fans.  He look exhausted but he was so cool about it.  I'm glad I got a picture with him.

Day 4: On the fourth day of filming I was not able to go, but I heard that it was another inside filming location.

Corey Monteith taking a picture of fans

Ryan Murphy
Me and Ian Brennan
Day 5: The final day of filming was so sad.   It meant that Glee would have to go back to LA.  In the afternoon they filmed at Washington Square Park.  You might remember the scene where Mercedes is pushing Artie with two hot dogs in his hands and Santana and Britney are right next to them.  It was a lot of fun to watch them film that scene.  Corey Monteith even came on to the set and actually took a picture of the fans. I even got a picture of Ryan Murphy. After a few hours they finished filming the scene and headed to their next location which was like 15 to 20 blocks away.  Since it was still day light they had to just set up and wait until it got dark. I was with Maria and Gaby and we decided to just walk around and get dinner.  While we were walking we ran into Ian Brennan.  One of the creators and writers of Glee.  I asked if we could take a picture with him and he said of course.  He is such a sweet guy I started to talk to him about how he got into the film industry and he told me he started off as an actor in the city.  He then got pulled into writing by writing a play.  I thought it was really cool. I got to get a picture with him and his autograph.  As we were leaving I asked him do you have any good ideas to get other glee cast members to get out of their trailers and he said "just say you were in spring awakening with them".  I found that to be very funny.  After a few hours passed and it became 9pm Glee started to continue filming.  It was really hard to see where I was standing to watch them film the scene.  While I was standing trying to see out of no where the producers started yelling "GET ON THE SIDEWALKS NOW" and then we saw a truck driver jump into his truck and move the truck as fast as he could.  Then there were producers taking down the lights for the scene.  This occurred in almost under a minute.  A few seconds later we could hear sirens and before we knew it the streets were cleared and a fire engine was flying past by.  I have never seen people move that fast before in my life.  After that happened I decided to move around the block to see if I could get a better spot to watch the scene.  Luckily I did and I got to watch Lea Michele and Corey Monteith film the scene where they walk together and get serenaded.  I could only see Lea Michele and Corey Monteith but it was still cool. I stayed there for another hour and a half watching and then decided to leave.  They were going to be filming until around 2am and I doubt any of them would stop to take a picture.  In the end it was an AMAZING experience and if I had the chance to do it all over again, I would.

TINA FEY FANS

Tina Fey stopped at Barnes and Nobles in Union Square in NYC on April 8, 2011.  People were lining up since 8am in the morning.  This Barnes and Nobles opens at 9am.  I arrived at around 11am that morning and there were about 15 people already lined up.  Since a lot of people work during the week days by the time 5pm rolled around the floor was closed to any more people.  The entire floor was packed with Tina Fey fans.  You couldn't fit anyone else on the floor.  Luckily since I arrived early I got in the second row.
Tina Fey being interviewed
Me and Grizz Chapman
This was my first book signing so I was very excited to go.  Also I'm a fan on Tina Fey because she is just amazingly talented and funny.  What made this book signing an even more amazing experience was by the guest who arrived around 6:30pm to support Tina Fey at her book signing.  It was no one other than Grizz Chapman from 30 Rock.  Now for people who have not seen 30 Rock, Grizz is in Tracy Jordan's (Tracy Morgan) entourage.  Also Grizz is over 7ft tall and I'm only 5 "3, so standing next to him made me feel really short.

Finally Tina Fey arrived just on time at 7pm to start the 30min interview.  Tina Fey was comical in her interview.  Almost every answer she gave made the audience laugh.  I know I was laughing quite a lot.  There were a few questions that she answered that were answered more seriously.  After the interview the book signing started.
Tina Fey

Grizz Chapman

At the time Tina Fey was 5 months pregnant and was getting over a cold.  The line went row by row to get your book signed.  Since I was in the second row it went pretty quickly.  when I finally got to meet Tina Fey I was speechless.  I didn't know what to say and I was thinking all day what I would say to her once I met her.  So, I said the first thing that came out of my mouth. " I hope I can be as successful as you are in the television industry".  Tina Fey said thank you and that was when I knew I loved going to book signings.

Introduction

Have you ever saw a television show or movie and wondered how cool it would be to meet one of the actors in it?  Well I have and for the past two months I have been going to filming locations and book signings.  These events are amazing to go to.  Everyone should go to at least one book signing or film location at least once in their life.
In this blog I am going to take you through my adventures of meeting the actors and actresses on television today.  I will start off with with the past celebrity meetings and then I will go into who I meet recently.  So lets get started!!!
